VOTER EDUCATION RESOURCES

To learn more about the candidates on the ballot, we recommend checking the candidates’ own statements in the League of Women Voters Guide, published in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and at Vote411 online, and the West News Magazine Voter Q & A. CANDIDATES FOR OFFICE

This is a list of candidates we are aware of who have either officially filed for office or have publicly stated their intention to run as write-in candidates in the area of West St. Louis County. Please note that inclusion on this list does not imply endorsement by our club. This is just a list of candidates for your information. Make sure to look into the candidates’ statements and backgrounds before you vote. We have included links to campaign Facebook pages, campaign websites, or government directory pages for candidates we were able to find such resources for.

If there is only one candidate listed that means that only one candidate filed for the position in question. (If you are disappointed to see a candidate running unopposed in a district you live in, we strongly encourage you to consider running for local office during the next election cycle!) If you are aware of a local write-in candidate we have missed including on this list, please let us know.

Note that this list is focused on the West St. Louis County municipalities in or near our township club area. For a list of all St. Louis County candidates who filed (not including write in candidates) please check the St. Louis County Board of Elections ballot report.

BALLOT ISSUES

PROPOSITION F – VARIOUS LOCAL FIRE DISTRICTS

Multiple West County area fire districts have an identical Proposition F on their ballots. These propositions would raise sales taxes by one percent to fund local fire departments, and lower fire district property taxes by half of the new revenue collected under the sales tax.

Overall this would result in a net tax increase for these fire districts, since the new sales tax increase would only partially be offset by the property tax decrease. These propositions would slightly lower property taxes (which are progressive taxes, meaning those with higher income tend to pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes) while raising sales taxes (which are regressive taxes, meaning, those with lower income tend to pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes). This means that people who do not own property in the district would take on some of the tax burden for the support of the local fire district while homeowners and business owners who do own property in the district would pay slightly less.
